AAP Protests Property Tax Hike in Chandigarh, Demands Immediate Rollback
Chandigarh, April 3, 2025: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Chandigarh, has strongly opposed the increase in property tax rates by the Municipal Corporation. In a formal letter submitted to the Municipal Commissioner, AAP has demanded the immediate withdrawal of this illegal tax hike, calling it a violation of legal norms and democratic procedures.
AAP Chandigarh emphasized that this tax hike had already been rejected by the elected members of the Municipal Corporation House, yet the administration arbitrarily implemented it. The party also pointed out that as per Section 90(3) of the Punjab Municipal Corporation Act, 1976, which was extended to the Union Territory of Chandigarh under the Punjab Municipal Corporation Law (Extension to Chandigarh) Act, 1994, any tax revision must be officially notified by the government. Without such a notification, this tax increase is illegal and void.
"This unlawful tax hike is placing an unnecessary financial burden on the residents of Chandigarh, many of whom are already struggling with inflation and economic hardships. Senior citizens, salaried employees, and small business owners are among the worst affected. This decision not only violates legal procedures but also disregards the democratic mandate of elected representatives," said Vijay Pal Singh, President, AAP Chandigarh.
AAP termed this move an attack on democratic values and criticized the administration for bypassing the decision of the Municipal Corporation House, calling it a violation of transparency, accountability, and good governance. The party has demanded that the administration immediately revoke the increased tax rates and adopt a transparent and consultative process involving all stakeholders before making any future tax policy decisions.
AAP reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the rights of Chandigarh residents and vowed to continue opposing any arbitrary and illegal actions. If the administration does not withdraw this decision, the party will be compelled to launch massive protests, said J.D. Ghai, Treasurer, AAP Chandigarh.
