Govt sets limit on diesel purchase

New Delhi, June 12, 2026: In a major move aimed at ensuring fuel availability and preventing shortages, the Central Government has restricted industrial and commercial consumers from purchasing petrol and diesel from regular retail fuel stations.
Under the new directive, large commercial and industrial users will be required to procure fuel only through authorised wholesale supply points. The restriction has been imposed for an initial period of 90 days, although it may be reviewed earlier depending on the supply situation.
The government has also introduced a limit on diesel sales at retail outlets, capping purchases at 200 litres per customer or vehicle per day.
Officials clarified that the measures are primarily targeted at bulk consumers and that there is no reason for concern among private vehicle owners or household consumers, as fuel supplies for the general public will continue without disruption.
According to government sources, the decision comes amid concerns over fuel availability due to ongoing tensions in West Asia, disruptions in global supply chains and elevated crude oil prices. Authorities said the move is intended to ensure equitable distribution of fuel, discourage hoarding and maintain a stable supply network across the country.
