Bungee Jumping Tragedy: 24-yr-old woman dies after staff forget to attach safety rope

São Paulo (Brazil), June 14, 2026: What was meant to be an adrenaline-filled adventure turned into a horrifying tragedy in Brazil’s São Paulo, where a 24-year-old woman lost her life after a severe negligence during a bungee jumping activity.
The incident has shocked the public and raised serious questions about safety standards in adventure tourism. The young woman, identified as Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, had reportedly paid around $290 (approximately ₹24,500) to a private adventure company to experience bungee jumping along with a recorded video of the activity.
A deadly jump from 35 meters
The accident took place at an abandoned bridge connecting the cities of Limeira and Cordeirópolis in São Paulo state. The bridge, long closed and officially abandoned, had recently become an unofficial spot for adventure seekers and tourists despite lacking proper authorization or safety supervision.
According to reports, the victim was instructed to perform the jump from a height of approximately 35 meters (115 feet). However, what followed was a catastrophic failure in basic safety procedures.
Witnesses revealed that the woman was not properly secured with a safety rope before being told to jump. Unaware of the fatal mistake, she stepped off the bridge and fell directly to the ground.
Safety negligence under scrutiny
Eyewitness accounts suggest that three other participants had successfully completed jumps before her without any issues. However, during her turn, crew members allegedly failed to conduct essential safety checks and completely overlooked whether the rope was attached.
The result was immediate and devastating. She fell straight down, and the impact proved fatal.
Panic and chaos at the scene
Tourists present at the site recorded the incident on their phones. As soon as she jumped, onlookers quickly realized there was no rope attached. Panic spread instantly, with screams echoing across the bridge.
The video of the incident has since gone viral, sparking outrage and disbelief on social media.
Attempted escape and arrests
Following the tragedy, witnesses claim that staff members appeared shocked and tried to flee the scene after realizing their mistake. However, local police quickly intervened and detained several individuals.
Reports suggest that at least six people have been arrested in connection with the incident, though official confirmation is still awaited.
