Unauthorized railway track crossing claims 60 lives in Ferozepur Division in May
Ferozepur, June 21, 2026: Crossing railway tracks through unauthorized routes and ignoring railway safety rules continue to pose a serious threat to public life. Despite continuous awareness campaigns by Ferozepur Division, incidents of people crossing railway tracks illegally remain a matter of concern. During the month of May, 60 people lost their lives after coming in contact with trains while crossing tracks through unauthorized means.
Railway authorities have warned that walking on railway lines, crossing tracks while using mobile phones or earphones, and attempting to board or alight from moving trains can lead to fatal accidents. Due to the high speed of trains, people often fail to judge the actual distance and speed of an approaching train. A train travelling at high speed can cover nearly 500 metres in just 15 seconds, leaving very little time to react.
Railway officials said that a moment of carelessness or haste can bring lifelong pain and regret for families. To prevent such incidents, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) is regularly conducting awareness drives at railway stations, crossings, educational institutions and other sensitive locations across the division.
Through public announcements, outreach programmes and special campaigns, people are being urged to strictly follow railway safety norms. Citizens have been advised to use only Foot Over Bridges (FOBs), subways or authorized railway crossings while crossing tracks.
Railway authorities have also appealed to passengers not to attempt boarding or getting down from moving trains and to avoid using mobile phones or earphones near railway tracks to ensure their own safety.
