Chandigarh, July 18, 2026: The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Saturday demanded an impartial investigation into the alleged political patronage extended to Punjab Police Inspector Gurinderjit Singh Nagra, who has reportedly been accused by US law enforcement agencies of links with gangsters.
Addressing a press conference, SAD chief spokesperson Arshdeep Singh Kler questioned who was protecting Nagra and called for a fair probe to identify those allegedly shielding the police officer.
Kler alleged that Nagra had earlier registered a case over the alleged desecration of the Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) election symbol, the broom, claiming the action reflected an attempt to please his political superiors.
Referring to reports of allegations made by US authorities, Kler claimed that if Nagra was involved in extortion activities, it was necessary to investigate whether he had received political backing and whether any proceeds of the alleged crime had been shared with those providing protection.
The SAD leader further alleged that the case reflected the law and order situation under the AAP government in Punjab. He claimed it was a matter of serious concern if a serving police inspector had links with gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria.
Kler also alleged that the Punjab Government had facilitated Bhagwanpuria's transfer from an Assam jail to Punjab and accused it of using the gangster to intimidate political opponents during the Tarn Taran Assembly by-election. He further alleged that the government had declined permission to prosecute Bhagwanpuria under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
Claiming there was a nexus between certain police officials, criminals and AAP leaders, Kler demanded an impartial investigation into the allegations. He also said that Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, who holds the Home portfolio, should identify those responsible or step down in the public interest.
The Aam Aadmi Party has not yet responded to the allegations made by the Shiromani Akali Dal.
