Punjab simplifies property registration language, replaces 35 complex revenue terms with easy Punjabi

Chandigarh, July 19, 2026: In a move aimed at making property registration more citizen-friendly, the Punjab Government has decided to replace 35 complex terms traditionally used in Revenue Department documents with simple Punjabi words to help people better understand land and property-related paperwork.
Announcing the decision, Revenue, Rehabilitation and Disaster Management Minister Hardeep Singh Mundian said the initiative reflects the Bhagwant Mann government's commitment to making public services simpler, transparent and more accessible.
He said complicated terminology in property registration documents often created confusion for citizens during the purchase and sale of land and other properties. To address this, the Revenue Department constituted a special committee to review the existing terminology and recommend simpler alternatives.
Based on the committee's recommendations, the government has approved the replacement of 35 commonly used technical and Persian-origin revenue terms with easy-to-understand Punjabi equivalents.
Mundian said the move is part of the government's people-centric governance model, aimed at ensuring that no citizen faces unnecessary difficulty in understanding official documents related to land ownership or property transactions.
The minister informed that instructions, along with the revised terminology list, have been issued to the Inspector General of Registration and all Deputy Commissioners across Punjab. Field officials have been directed to adopt the new terminology in property registration documents to improve public convenience.
Among the key changes, terms such as "Arazi" will now be replaced with "Zameen", "Sakin" with "Vasneek", "Hasab Zabta" with "Kanoon Anusar", "Bainama" with "Vikri Nama", "Dakhil Kharij" with "Intkaal", "Fard" with "Nakal Jamabandi", and "Tarmeem" with "Sodh" or "Darusti".
The government said the initiative is intended to make legal and revenue documents easier for the general public to read and understand, thereby improving transparency and reducing confusion in property-related transactions.
