Punjab orders structural audit of all Govt buildings, bridges and culverts

Chandigarh, September 7, 2026: Punjab Public Works Minister Harbhajan Singh ETO has directed officials to conduct a comprehensive structural audit of all government buildings, bridges, culverts and other bridge structures under the Public Works Department (PWD) across the state.
The minister said public safety will not be compromised and directed field officers to identify structural deficiencies and take immediate corrective measures, including repairs, preventive work and rehabilitation wherever required.
Government buildings found to be unsafe will not be allowed to remain in use until the required repairs are completed and the structures are declared safe again, according to the directions.
ETO has also ordered safety inspections of bridges, culverts and other structures. If any structure is found unsafe, authorities have been instructed to impose immediate traffic restrictions or other necessary safety measures until remedial work is completed.
The minister further directed that no modification, strengthening, widening, demolition or other work that could affect the structural integrity of any government building, bridge or culvert be undertaken without prior approval from the competent authority.
All such works must comply with applicable technical codes, rules and departmental instructions, he said.
Taking a strict stance on safety compliance, ETO warned that negligence or carelessness by officials will invite departmental action against those found responsible.
He said the Punjab Government is committed to maintaining safe, strong and sustainable public infrastructure and ensuring that the safety of citizens remains the top priority.
