Manjit Singh GK questions Delhi Govt’s stand on Jagtar Singh Hawara’s transfer to Punjab jail

New Delhi, September 18, 2026: Former Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) president Manjit Singh GK has questioned the Delhi government’s opposition to shifting Jagtar Singh Hawara from Delhi’s Mandoli Jail to a prison in Punjab.
Reacting to the latest developments in Hawara’s case, GK said the government should reconsider its stand and allow him to be shifted to Punjab. The Delhi government opposed Hawara’s plea for transfer to a Punjab jail during the hearing on Thursday, citing security concerns and his previous escape from a Punjab prison.
GK also raised the issue of parole for Hawara, whose mother is reportedly ailing. He questioned whether the authorities could consider granting him parole for two days or a longer period on humanitarian grounds.
Hawara, who is serving a life sentence in connection with the assassination of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh, has been lodged in Delhi’s Mandoli Jail. The Punjab and Haryana High Court had earlier directed the authorities to process his parole plea in a time-bound manner.
GK alleged that different standards were being applied in cases involving Sikh prisoners. Referring to the release of other high-profile prisoners, he questioned why Hawara had remained incarcerated for decades.
He also questioned the role of Delhi Cabinet minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa, asking why he was not raising the issue within the government.
GK said he would oppose the BJP on the issue if the government continued with what he described as an unacceptable approach. He also warned that such issues could have political repercussions in Punjab ahead of the elections.
“We will also protest over this issue,” GK said, adding that he would continue to raise the matter publicly.
Hawara had earlier declined a two-day custody parole offered by the Delhi Prisons Department to meet his ailing mother, seeking regular parole instead.
