Chandigarh, October 8, 2026: The Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar Association has condemned alleged derogatory remarks made by Congress leader Sukhpal Singh Khaira against Law Officers in the Office of the Advocate General, Punjab, and demanded that he withdraw the remarks and tender an apology to the legal fraternity.
The association’s statement followed a representation submitted by the Law Officers to HCBA President Rohit Sud and the Executive Committee regarding a video circulating on social media platforms, including WhatsApp and Facebook.
According to the representation, Khaira allegedly referred to government lawyers as “Bhade de Tattu ne eh Sarkari Vakil.”
In a statement issued by HCBA Honorary Secretary Parampreet Singh Bajwa (Harry), the association said political differences and criticism of government functioning were an essential part of democracy, but maintained that such criticism should remain within the bounds of dignity and mutual respect, particularly when directed at members of the legal profession.
The HCBA said Law Officers were an integral part of the Bar and were entitled to the same dignity, honour and professional respect as other practising advocates.
The association expressed solidarity with the Law Officers of the Advocate General’s Office and urged Khaira to withdraw his remarks and tender a formal apology.
Khaira, however, objected to the association’s statement, saying he was not given an opportunity to present his side before it was issued.
In a social media post, Khaira alleged that the complaint was politically motivated and questioned the association’s decision to issue a statement based on the representation of the Law Officers.
Khaira also alleged that the Law Officers were employees of the Punjab government and claimed that the government engages expensive private lawyers despite having a large number of Law Officers in the Advocate General’s Office. He further alleged that the complaint was linked to political differences between him and the ruling Aam Aadmi Party government.
Khaira called upon the HCBA president to withdraw what he described as an erroneous statement and said the Bar Association should not become involved in the political conflict between the government and opposition parties.
