New Delhi, October 8, 2026: The Supreme Court on Thursday deferred hearing on the Punjab government’s plea challenging a Punjab and Haryana High Court order directing a CBI probe into alleged corruption linked to the office of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann.
A Bench comprising Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice Sheel Nagu posted the matter for hearing on October 9 after the case file reached Justice Nagu late.
“We will have it tomorrow. The file hadn’t reached my brother judge,” Justice Datta said during the hearing.
Senior advocate Vikas Singh, appearing for the Punjab government, sought an interim order restraining any precipitative action in the matter. Justice Datta, however, questioned how such an order could be considered when Justice Nagu had not yet had an opportunity to examine the case papers.
The Punjab government had approached the Supreme Court on October 6 challenging the High Court’s order directing the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to investigate allegations of corruption connected with the Chief Minister’s Office and submit its report within two months.
The state government has sought a stay on the operation of the High Court order until its plea is finally decided.
During the earlier hearing on Tuesday, Vikas Singh had argued that the allegations were being raised during an election period and contended that the matter involved a violation of the federal structure.
The Supreme Court is now scheduled to hear the matter on October 9.
