Chandigarh, November 4, 2026: Senior Akali leader and former MP Professor Prem Singh Chandumajra has resigned from Akali Dal Punarsurjit, citing differences over the approach and strategy towards achieving Panthic unity.
In a statement issued to the media, Chandumajra said bringing all Akali and Panthic organisations together on a common platform was essential to safeguard the interests of Punjab and the Panth.
He said the prevailing circumstances demanded that all groups set aside their differences and adopt a collective strategy to protect Punjab’s rights, Panthic issues and Punjabi identity.
Explaining the reasons behind his decision, Chandumajra said the public response given by Giani Harpreet Singh to his appeal for Panthic unity had made him realise that there were differences in their thinking, ideology and working methods.
In view of the lack of coordination on these issues, he decided to part ways with Akali Dal Punarsurjit, he said. Chandumajra clarified that his resignation would not affect his commitment to the Panth, Punjab, Punjabi identity and the protection of the state’s rights.
His resignation marks a significant development in Punjab’s Akali politics, particularly amid continuing discussions over bringing different Panthic and Akali groups onto a common platform.
