36-Day Chandigarh Rail Block; 12 Trains Cancelled for reconstruction and infrastructure works
Ferozepur, September 4, 2026: The Railways has approved a 36-day traffic block at Chandigarh Railway Station for reconstruction and infrastructure works being undertaken at the instance of the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA), and rail passengers are set to face major inconvenience for over a month.
The block will remain in force from September 10 to October 15 and is expected to bring significant changes in train operations, including cancellations, diversion of originating and terminating stations and changes in platform allocations.
As many as 12 trains originating from Chandigarh and Kalka have been cancelled during the affected period. Among the major services hit are the Amritsar–Chandigarh–Amritsar trains (14541/14542), Chandigarh–Ferozepur–Chandigarh (14629/14630), besides services operating on the Kalka–Ambala, Kalka–Delhi and DLPC–Kalka routes.
Under the revised arrangements, six trains will originate from Ambala Cantonment, while eight trains will operate from Mohali instead of Chandigarh. Passengers who normally board these trains at Chandigarh will consequently have to make their own arrangements to reach the alternative stations.
The 36-day block has been divided into three phases of 12 days each to minimise the impact on train operations. The first phase will run from September 10 to 21, the second from September 22 to October 3 and the third from October 4 to 15.
During the block, the RLDA will undertake major reconstruction work at Chandigarh station, including erection and launching of the balance through-roof structure and dismantling of girders of the existing foot-overbridge. Strengthening of pillars and roofing-related work will also be carried out as part of the station's infrastructure upgrade.
The first phase will additionally witness changes in platform arrangements to facilitate construction, cleaning and washing of trains. Platforms allotted to nearly 20 trains are likely to be changed, with some services presently handled from Platforms 1 and 2 being shifted elsewhere.
Railway officials said the construction agency had secured approval from the Ambala Division for the block for the second time within a month. The phased approach has been adopted to keep train operations running from alternative locations as far as possible while allowing the construction work to progress.
Passengers travelling between September 10 and October 15 have been advised to check the latest status of their trains before leaving for the station. Those affected by changes in originating or terminating stations should allow additional travel time and verify whether their train will operate from Chandigarh, Ambala Cantonment or Mohali.
With platform arrangements also subject to change, passengers have been advised to check station display boards and announcements after reaching Chandigarh Railway Station and to reach well in advance to avoid inconvenience caused by crowds and operational changes.
