US Breaking: Cargo plane overruns runway at Miami Airport; Kills 5, injures 5

Miami (Florida), September 6, 2026: At least five people were killed and five others injured after a cargo aircraft overran a runway at Miami International Airport on Sunday and crashed into several vehicles, authorities said.
The aircraft, which was part of Amazon’s cargo fleet, had arrived from Puerto Rico. After landing, the plane failed to stop within the runway area and went off the runway, striking vehicles nearby.
The crash occurred during the busy Labor Day weekend, forcing authorities to temporarily close all runways at the airport and disrupting air travel. Numerous flights were cancelled or delayed as emergency crews responded to the incident.
US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy warned travellers in the Miami area to expect major disruptions, including significant delays and possible flight cancellations.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) also confirmed that Miami International Airport’s runways do not have an Engineered Materials Arresting System (EMAS), a specially designed surface intended to slow and stop aircraft that run beyond the end of a runway.
The FAA has recommended the installation of EMAS at airports, although the system is not mandatory. Airports can instead use other safety measures approved by the agency to reduce the risks associated with runway overruns.
The crash left passengers stranded at the airport for hours, with reports of long queues and widespread frustration as airlines dealt with cancellations and limited replacement flights.
