Mohali (Punjab), January 7, 2026: More than 2,700 wrestlers representing over 200 universities from across various states and Union Territories showcased thrilling, power-packed performances at the All-India Inter-University Wrestling Greco-Roman and Freestyle (Men) Championship 2025–26.
The prestigious championship was organized by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and hosted at Chandigarh University, Mohali, Punjab. More than 1,000 bouts have taken place in 20 weight categories in freestyle and Greco Roman wrestling styles in the five-day long national championship.
While Yogeshwar Dutt, Olympic Bronze Medalist, recipient of Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna and Padma Shri and Arjuna Awardee graced the occasion as Chief Guest, Manjeet Chillar, professional Kabaddi player and Arjuna Awardee was Guest of Honour.
On the opening day of the national championship, Chandigarh University’s Hardeep, in a one-sided contest defeated Nitin of PU Gujarat by 8-0 points in Greco Roman 130 kg weight category in the final bout to clinch gold medal. In the same category, two nail biting contests were witnessed for two bronze medals which were won by Shakti from Gautam Budh University, Noida by defeating Rahul from University of Rajasthan by 12-7 and Sachin from RIMT Gobindgarh defeated Dishant of MDU Haryana by 5-4 points.
Similarly, in a yet another one-sided contest, Tushar from Chandigarh University defeated Kapil from JMAU Kota Rajasthan in the freestyle 61 kg weight category by 11-0 points to clinch gold medal.
Kartik from MDU Haryana defeated Kasha from Kalinga University Chhattisgarh by 11-0 and Pushap from PU Chandigarh defeated Ashish PU Gujarat by 9-7 points to win bronze medals in the same category. In another bout in Greco German 97 kg weight category, Vansh from RRBM Alwar Rajasthan defeated Bapu Saheb from RCV Balgavi by 8-0.

“In 2024, Chandigarh University became the country’s first private university to win the prestigious Maulana Abul Kalam Azad (MAKA) Trophy after securing a record 71 medals at the Khelo India University Games. In addition, the university won the Khelo India University Games for two consecutive years in 2024 and 2025. Chandigarh University students have won a total of 610 medals, including 138 national and 87 international medals. CU provides sports scholarships with an annual budget of Rs 6.5 crore and offers free facilities such as special diets, sports kits, travel, coaching, hostel accommodation, and other amenities. A total of 1,183 student-athletes, including 562 women, are currently benefiting from sports scholarships at Chandigarh University,” added Sandhu.
