Amritsar (Punjab), February 10, 2026: Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) President Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami on Monday strongly objected to the Delhi government’s decision to once again reject the release petition of Prof. Devinderpal Singh Bhullar, terming the move an injustice against the Sikh community and a violation of human rights.
Advocate Dhami said that Prof. Bhullar’s release petition had earlier been rejected multiple times during the tenure of the Aam Aadmi Party government by the Delhi Sentence Review Board, and alleged that the current BJP-led government is continuing the same approach.
He remarked that despite the Sentence Review Board recommending remission in the cases of several other prisoners, Prof. Bhullar’s case has been repeatedly turned down, even after he has completed over 33 years in imprisonment.
Calling the decision deeply disappointing, the SGPC President said the continued rejection of Prof. Bhullar’s release has caused anguish within the Sikh community. He described the move as a clear violation of human rights and questioned the selective approach adopted by successive governments in dealing with Sikh-related matters.
Advocate Dhami further accused the BJP of maintaining double standards, stating that while the party claims to be sympathetic towards Sikhs, its actions reflect otherwise.
“Sikhs have made immense sacrifices for the nation, yet the negative attitude of governments towards Sikh issues has time and again led to disillusionment,” he said.
Appealing to the Delhi government to reconsider its decision, Advocate Dhami urged authorities to ensure justice for Prof. Devinderpal Singh Bhullar, who, he pointed out, has already spent more time in jail than the prescribed sentence. He demanded that orders for Prof. Bhullar’s immediate release be issued without further delay.
