Chandigarh, June 3, 2026: In a significant development, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has reportedly termed the arrest of Shiromani Akali Dal worker Jobanjeet Singh by the Majitha Police as illegal and ordered his immediate release.
The information was shared by Arshdeep Singh Kler, Chief Spokesperson and Head of the Legal Cell of the Shiromani Akali Dal.
According to Kler, the High Court came down heavily on the police action and questioned the circumstances surrounding the arrest. He claimed that the Court also issued strong observations against the concerned police officials during the hearing.
Kler further stated that the Court warned that if Jobanjeet Singh is ultimately found to be innocent, the concerned officer could face serious consequences, including financial liability. He alleged that the Court observed that the officer responsible could be directed to deposit his salary into the government treasury and face a penalty of up to Rs 1 crore.
Describing the order as a major setback for the Punjab Government, Kler said the decision vindicates the stand taken by senior Akali leader Bikram Singh Majithia, who had been demanding Jobanjeet Singh's release and had maintained that the youth had been falsely implicated.
He termed the High Court's intervention a "strong rebuke" to the state government's handling of the case and said it reinforces the principle that arrests must be made strictly in accordance with the law.
A detailed copy of the High Court order is awaited, and the official version of the observations made by the Court is yet to be examined.
