Chandigarh, June 5:
In a remarkable celebration of World Environment Day, Chhatbir Zoo transformed hundreds of visitors into active environmental stewards through a unique public participation initiative that combined tree plantation with environmental awareness.
Moving beyond conventional celebrations, the zoo invited tourists and nature lovers to become direct contributors to conservation efforts by planting saplings within the zoo premises.
The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from visitors of all age groups, who planted more than 100 saplings across designated green zones of the zoo. Families, children, students, and tourists from different parts of Punjab and neighboring states joined hands in the plantation drive, turning their visit into a meaningful act of environmental responsibility.
Adding further significance to the occasion, over 2,500 visitors took a collective pledge to protect nature, conserve biodiversity, reduce pollution, and adopt environmentally sustainable practices in their daily lives.
The oath ceremony reflected the growing public commitment towards safeguarding the planet for future generations.
The initiative was spearheaded by Field Director Nalin Yadav and Education-cum-PRO Harpal Singh, who emphasized the importance of involving citizens directly in conservation activities.
Their efforts to make environmental protection a people's movement received widespread appreciation from visitors and environmental enthusiasts alike.
Speaking on the occasion, Field Director Nalin Yadav said, "Environmental protection cannot remain confined to official programmes or one-day celebrations.
When people plant a tree with their own hands, they develop an emotional connection with nature and become lifelong guardians of the environment. Conservation succeeds only when every citizen becomes a stakeholder in protecting our natural heritage."
The plantation drive also served as an educational platform, highlighting the crucial role of trees in combating climate change, improving air quality, conserving biodiversity, and maintaining ecological balance.
Zoo officials interacted with visitors and encouraged them to continue similar plantation activities in their homes, schools, workplaces, and communities.
The enthusiastic response to the programme demonstrated the growing awareness among citizens regarding environmental issues and the willingness of the public to actively contribute towards a greener future.
Chhatbir Zoo authorities announced that such public participation-based conservation initiatives will be organized regularly in the future. By involving visitors directly in environmental activities, the zoo aims to strengthen community engagement and reinforce the message that conservation begins with individual action and collective responsibility.
The World Environment Day celebration at Chhatbir Zoo thus stood out as a powerful example of how public institutions can inspire meaningful citizen participation in environmental protection, transforming ordinary visitors into true "Green Warriors" committed to preserving nature.
