Chandigarh, June 6, 2026:
In a major administrative development that is likely to bring relief to dozens of Punjab Police Service (PPS) officers awaiting elevation to the Indian Police Service (IPS), the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) has intervened in the long-pending issue of promotion quota vacancies and directed the Home Department to expedite the process.
The intervention came after Punjab MLA Jagroop Singh Gill raised concerns regarding the delay in filling IPS cadre posts through the promotion quota, a matter that has been pending for an extended period and has generated widespread concern among eligible PPS officers across the state.
Taking note of the issue, the Chief Minister’s Office has issued directions to Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Alok Shekhar to examine the matter and take all necessary steps to ensure the promotion exercise is completed at the earliest. The directive is being seen as a significant push towards resolving a long-standing administrative bottleneck that has affected the career progression of many senior police officers.
Sources familiar with the matter said that several PPS officers who have completed the required years of service and fulfill the eligibility criteria have been awaiting their induction into the IPS cadre. Delays in the promotion process have not only impacted individual career advancement but have also created vacancies in the leadership structure of the police force.
The promotion of PPS officers to the IPS cadre is a crucial mechanism for strengthening the senior leadership of the Punjab Police. Such promotions provide experienced state police officers an opportunity to serve in higher administrative and operational roles while ensuring continuity and institutional experience within the force.
Welcoming the prompt response of the Chief Minister’s Office, MLA Jagroop Singh Gill stated that deserving officers should not have to wait indefinitely for promotions that are due to them. He emphasized that timely promotions are essential for maintaining the morale, motivation, and efficiency of the police force.
Gill further observed that police officers perform challenging duties under demanding circumstances and deserve a transparent and time-bound promotion process. He expressed confidence that the Home Department, under the guidance of ACS Home Alok Shekhar, would take swift action to complete all pending formalities and move the promotion quota exercise forward without unnecessary delay.
The development has been widely appreciated by serving and retired police officers, who believe that expediting the induction of eligible PPS officers into the IPS cadre will strengthen administrative efficiency and improve command-level functioning within the Punjab Police.
Many stakeholders have also pointed out that regular and timely promotions are essential for maintaining a healthy organizational structure and ensuring that senior positions are filled by experienced officers.
Officials note that the promotion process involves multiple administrative stages, including assessment of vacancies, eligibility verification, scrutiny of service records, and coordination with the concerned authorities. The intervention from the Chief Minister’s Office is expected to accelerate these procedures and facilitate early resolution of pending cases.
The move also reflects the Punjab Government’s commitment to addressing service-related concerns of its employees and ensuring that merit-based career advancement opportunities are not delayed unnecessarily. Observers believe that the intervention will help restore confidence among officers awaiting promotion and send a positive message regarding administrative responsiveness.
With the Chief Minister’s Office now actively monitoring the matter and the Home Department having been instructed to take necessary action, expectations are high that the long-awaited promotion quota exercise for PPS officers will witness significant progress in the coming weeks.
Further developments are anticipated as the Home Department initiates action under the directions of ACS Home Alok Shekhar and advances the process for filling IPS cadre vacancies through the promotion quota.
