Chandigarh, June 12, 2026: Punjab's Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana (MMSY) has provided cashless medical treatment to more than 2.26 lakh patients through over 3.65 lakh treatment procedures worth ₹632.50 crore within five months of its launch, Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. Balbir Singh said on Thursday.
Highlighting the impact of the scheme, Dr. Balbir Singh said the Bhagwant Mann-led government has designed the programme to ensure that eligible residents receive quality healthcare without the financial burden often associated with private health insurance policies.
The minister said one of the key features of the scheme is that beneficiaries are not required to pay any premium. Unlike private insurance plans, which often involve annual premium payments and increased costs with age, the government scheme provides healthcare coverage free of charge.
He said the scheme covers more than 2,300 treatment packages, including cancer care, cardiac procedures, dialysis, intensive care and other specialised treatments. Another major advantage, he added, is that beneficiaries receive coverage for pre-existing diseases from day one, whereas private insurers typically impose waiting periods ranging from two to four years.
Dr. Balbir Singh noted that the scheme has been particularly beneficial for senior citizens, who often face higher premiums and coverage restrictions under private insurance plans. Under MMSY, all eligible beneficiaries receive the same healthcare benefits irrespective of age.
The Health Minister further informed that treatment is available at 850 empanelled hospitals, including government and private healthcare institutions across Punjab. The scheme operates through a largely cashless and paperless system, reducing documentation requirements and administrative delays.
According to the minister, more than 46.21 lakh health cards have already been issued under the scheme, covering nearly 22 lakh families across the state. He said the growing enrolment reflects increasing public confidence in the programme and the government's commitment to making healthcare affordable and accessible.
Dr. Balbir Singh reiterated that the Punjab Government aims to reduce out-of-pocket medical expenses and ensure that no family is forced to compromise on healthcare due to financial constraints.
