Chandigarh, June 13, 2026: Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri has made a strong statement on the possibility of a renewed alliance between the Shiromani Akali Dal and the Bharatiya Janata Party, asserting that the BJP will no longer accept the role of a “junior partner” in Punjab politics.
Speaking during a visit to Ludhiana, Puri said that if the Akali Dal seeks to rebuild ties with the BJP, it must recognize the party’s significantly stronger political position. He noted that the BJP has grown into the world’s largest political party and that any future alliance would have to reflect the changed political realities.
The Union Minister said the BJP has steadily expanded its organisational base and public support in Punjab over the years. Indicating a shift in the power equation, he stated that the party would expect to play the leading role in any future partnership.
Puri emphasized that the BJP remains focused on development, good governance, and public welfare in Punjab. He added that the party is increasingly emerging as a strong political alternative in the state and is capable of expanding its influence independently.
While refraining from commenting on any formal alliance discussions, Puri said the final decision would rest with the BJP’s central leadership. However, he maintained that the party’s political standing in Punjab is far stronger than it was in the past, making it clear that any future alliance would be based on the current balance of political strength.
