Chandigarh, June 16, 2026:A fresh political and religious controversy has erupted in Punjab after Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann issued his first detailed video response following a recent Hukamnama (edict) from the Jathedar of the Takht Sri Akal Takht Sahib, which had taken a strong position against him in connection with a disputed viral video.
In his statement, CM Mann firmly rejected the authenticity of the video that formed the basis of the Akal Takht’s directive, calling it “completely unrelated” to him and alleging that it was being used as part of a “political conspiracy” to defame him.
“The video is not mine,” says CM Mann
Addressing the issue in a video message, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said, “The video on which the Hukamnama has been issued against me is not mine. Even when I was called to the Akal Takht Sahib, I clearly stated that the person in the video does not resemble me—neither in face nor in physical appearance.”
He added that he holds profound respect for the supreme religious institution of Sikhism, the Takht Sri Akal Takht Sahib Hukamnama Controversy 2026, and reiterated that he bows before it with full reverence.
“I consider Sri Akal Takht Sahib supreme. I cannot even imagine going against it in my dreams,” he said.
Allegations of political influence
Escalating his response, Mann also targeted the management associated with the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), alleging that decisions were being influenced by “political masters.”
He said the present situation reflects inconsistency in approach, claiming that the same leadership earlier demanded strict anti-sacrilege laws from the government but later opposed them after legislation was introduced.
The SGPC, referenced in his remarks as Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, has not yet issued an official response to the Chief Minister’s latest allegations at the time of reporting.
Reference to Punjab’s political fault lines
Without naming individuals directly in most instances, CM Mann also referred to past political developments in Punjab, alleging that certain groups had previously admitted responsibility for major law-and-order and governance failures but later retracted their statements.
He further accused rival political forces of repeatedly changing positions on sensitive religious and administrative issues for political gain.
“Religion being used as a weapon,” says CM
The Chief Minister claimed that his government’s decisions regarding Punjab’s water rights, youth issues, agriculture, and Sikh religious values have created discomfort among opposition groups.
“These decisions are being opposed because they serve Punjab’s interests,” he said. “Religion is being used as a weapon to defame me, but these conspiracies will not succeed.”
He appealed to the Sikh community, referred to as the Guru Nanak Naam Leva Sangat, to remain cautious of what he described as politically motivated narratives.
Call to the Sikh Sangat
Concluding his statement, Mann said that the final judgment lies with the people. “As long as the Sangat has entrusted me with responsibility, I will continue to take decisions in the interest of Punjab. Ultimately, the final decision will rest with the people.”
