New Delhi, June 23, 2026: Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs George Kurian has resigned from the Union Council of Ministers following the end of his Rajya Sabha tenure. According to an official announcement from Rashtrapati Bhavan, President Droupadi Murmu, on the advice of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has accepted Kurian’s resignation with immediate effect.
Kurian was serving as Minister of State in the Ministry of Minority Affairs and also held responsibilities in the Ministries of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying. He was the only representative of the Christian community in the Modi-led Union Cabinet.

His tenure as a Rajya Sabha member ended on June 21. The development comes after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) decided not to renominate him during the recent Rajya Sabha elections held on June 18.
Political observers view the resignation as significant, especially as the BJP also chose not to renominate another Union Minister, Ravneet Singh Bittu, whose Rajya Sabha term has also concluded. The decisions have sparked speculation about a possible reshuffle and broader changes in the Modi Cabinet in the coming weeks.
