Muzaffarnagar (Uttar Pradesh), June 23, 2026: Satpal alias Sattu, an alleged serial rapist who had escaped from a Punjab jail earlier this year, died on Tuesday after being injured in a police encounter in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar district.
According to police, Satpal had been lodged in Ludhiana jail for the past 16 years and escaped from custody in February 2026. Since then, he had reportedly been hiding in Muzaffarnagar and nearby areas while evading arrest.
Police officials said Satpal was wanted in multiple criminal cases and had been on the run since his escape from Punjab.
The encounter took place around 11:30 p.m. on Monday when police tracked down the accused and attempted to apprehend him. During the exchange of fire, Satpal sustained two bullet injuries — one in the leg and another above the waist. He was immediately taken into custody and admitted to a hospital for treatment.
However, his condition reportedly deteriorated on Tuesday. Doctors said he suffered excessive blood loss and was declared dead at around 1 p.m. Police described Satpal as an alleged serial rapist and said he had been a high-priority target following his escape from prison earlier this year.
Further investigations are underway, and authorities are expected to submit a detailed report on the encounter and the circumstances surrounding his death.
The incident has drawn attention due to the accused’s long criminal history and his escape from a Punjab jail after serving more than a decade and a half behind bars.
