Pathankot (Punjab), July 8, 2026: In a major step to strengthen Punjab's flood management infrastructure, the Punjab Government has completed the modernisation and electrification of all 54 gates at the Madhopur Headworks at a cost of nearly Rs 50 crore, Water Resources Minister Barinder Kumar Goyal announced on Wednesday.
Inspecting the upgraded headworks, the minister said all 54 gates have been structurally strengthened and made fully operational through electric motors, while the three gates damaged during the 2025 floods have been reconstructed with an improved design incorporating enhanced safety features.
The minister has been touring flood-prone areas in Pathankot district to review flood protection measures and assess the department's preparedness ahead of the monsoon. During his visit, he also inspected vulnerable stretches along the Ravi River near the Osho Ashram on Shahpur Kandi Road.
"I am personally visiting all the areas that were severely affected by last year's floods. Our objective is to ensure Punjab does not witness a repeat of such devastation. We are reviewing all preventive measures and the preparedness of the department in advance," Goyal said.
He recalled that following the devastating floods of August 27, 2025, the department launched restoration work on a war footing. Nearly 500 metres of protective embankments were constructed on both sides of the damaged stretches, while temporary ring bundhs helped restore full-capacity water supply to canal systems serving Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir from October 1, 2025.
Goyal said the Punjab Government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, has completed strengthening and restoration works at all vulnerable locations identified after last year's floods.
He assured that all flood protection measures are now in place and the state is fully prepared to tackle any flood-like situation during the monsoon season, adding that there is no need for public concern as adequate safety arrangements have been made.
