Senior Journalist Mahesh Sharma Passes Away; Gurbhajan Gill mourns irreparable loss

Chandigarh, July 15, 2026: Senior journalist Mahesh Sharma, the The Tribune correspondent from Malerkotla and a widely respected figure in the Ahmedgarh region, passed away on Wednesday, leaving the journalism fraternity and his admirers in deep mourning.
Expressing grief over Sharma’s demise, eminent Punjabi litterateur Gurbhajan Gill described his passing as an irreparable loss. Gill said Sharma would always be remembered for his honesty, dedication to journalism and unwavering commitment to society.
“It is deeply saddening to learn about the passing of my dear brother and a pillar of Ahmedgarh, Mahesh Sharma. His integrity, hard work and service to society through journalism will always be remembered,” Gill said in a condolence message.
Gill also recalled his association with Sharma’s son, Venu Gopal Sharma, whom he praised as a talented Punjabi poet. He noted that one of Venu Gopal’s poems on the farmers’ movement was included in his edited anthology Dharti Vangare Takht Nu.
He also expressed condolences to Sharma’s close friend Ravinder Puri, recalling that the two were often seen together and were known for their warm and affectionate nature.
Praying for the departed soul, Gill said, “May the Almighty grant eternal peace to the departed soul and give strength to the bereaved family to bear this immense loss.”
Mahesh Sharma’s death has been widely mourned by journalists, writers and members of civil society, who remembered him as a dedicated professional and a compassionate individual.
