Chandigarh, July 29, 2026: Tension erupted at the Mohali-Chandigarh border on Wednesday as members of Akali Dal Waris Punjab De and other Sikh organisations attempted to march towards Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s official residence, demanding the release of Bandi Singhs and Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh.
Heavy police deployment and barricading were put in place to prevent the protesters from entering Chandigarh. As the demonstrators attempted to move forward, police stopped them at the barricades, leading to a heated confrontation between the two sides.
The situation escalated into a scuffle after protesters allegedly attempted to breach the barricades. Police used water cannons to disperse the crowd and push the protesters back. Reports also suggested that mild baton charging took place during the confrontation.
Despite the police action, some protesters reportedly managed to cross the barricades and move towards Chandigarh.
The protesters said their primary demand was the release of Bandi Singhs lodged in various prisons across Punjab and other parts of the country. They also reiterated their demand for the release of Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh, who is currently lodged in Dibrugarh Jail in Assam.
