Former Congress Councillor booked for assaulting MC Clerk, Obstructing Govt duty
Ferozepur, August 7, 2026: Ferozepur City Police have registered a criminal case against former Congress Municipal Councillor Rajesh Chanana for allegedly assaulting a Municipal Council clerk, obstructing him from performing his official duties, and criminally intimidating him inside the Municipal Council office.
Notably, in the recently concluded Municipal Council elections, Rajesh Chanana's mother was elected as a Municipal Councillor on a Congress ticket.
The case (FIR No. 266 dated August 5, 2026) was registered at City Police Station, Ferozepur, on the complaint of Ravinder Kumar, a clerk with the Municipal Council.
According to the complaint, Rajesh Chanana visited Room No. 105 of the Municipal Council office at around 4 pm and sought information regarding a shop located at Namdev Chowk. The complainant politely informed him that the relevant records did not fall under his department and were maintained by the Engineering Branch. The complaint alleges that Chanana, instead of accepting the explanation, became furious, hurled abuses at the clerk, physically assaulted him, tore his shirt, and prevented him from discharging his official duties.
Following the complaint, police registered a case under Sections 221, 132 and 351(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which correspond to the erstwhile Sections 186, 353 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
SP (Detective) Manjit Singh said that Inspector Sukhdev Singh has been appointed as the Investigating Officer to probe the case. He stated that police teams are conducting raids to arrest the accused and that further action will be taken strictly in accordance with law after completion of the investigation.
