Trainer Aircraft veers off runway during training exercise in Baramati, no injuries

Baramati (Maharashtra), August 9, 2026: A trainer aircraft was involved in a runway excursion at the Baramati airfield in Maharashtra on Sunday during a training exercise. No injuries were reported in the incident.
Pune Rural Superintendent of Police (SP) Sandeep Singh Gill said the aircraft, identified as VT-SEX, veered off the extended paved surface to the right beyond the Runway 29 threshold.
According to officials, Capt. Chirag Shashikant Doifode and Cadet Abhijeet Jundre were on board the aircraft at the time of the incident. Both were reported safe.
The aircraft initially entered the runway through Link Bravo and lined up at the threshold of Runway 29, where a rejected take-off was carried out. It was subsequently positioned at the threshold of Runway 11 for another rejected take-off.
During the exercise, the aircraft could not be brought to a complete stop on the runway and continued beyond the threshold of Runway 29. It subsequently veered off the extended paved surface to the right side.
The incident took place during a training exercise, and further details regarding the circumstances leading to the runway excursion are awaited.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has been taking various measures to strengthen aviation safety in India. The regulator has also organised seminars involving senior officials of the Civil Aviation Ministry, industry leaders and aviation professionals to discuss measures for improving safety across the country's civil aviation sector.
India is currently the world's third-largest domestic civil aviation market. According to officials, domestic passenger traffic has grown at an average annual rate of around 9% over the past decade, while cargo volumes have increased by 2.9%. The fleet strength of Indian carriers has more than doubled, rising from 395 aircraft in 2014 to 844 in 2025.
