Chandigarh-born IPS officer in PM Modi’s security team awarded President’s Medal

Chandigarh, August 16, 2026: Chandigarh-born IPS officer Umesh Chander Datta, currently serving as Inspector General with the elite Special Protection Group (SPG) in New Delhi, has been awarded the President’s Medal for Distinguished Service on the occasion of Independence Day.
Datta, who belongs to the Rajasthan cadre of the Indian Police Service, is presently associated with the SPG, the specialised force responsible for the security of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Born and educated in Chandigarh, Datta is a gold medallist from Panjab University. He also received the distinction of being named Best Officer Trainee in Outdoor Training at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA), Mussoorie.
During his career, Datta served as District Superintendent of Police in several Rajasthan districts, including Barmer, Nagaur, Sri Ganganagar, Bhilwara and Alwar, holding these assignments for more than a decade.
He later served as Inspector General, Jaipur Range, a position he held for more than two-and-a-half years.
Datta has also worked with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), where he handled several sensitive cases. In recognition of his service, he was awarded the Police Medal for Meritorious Service on Republic Day in 2016.
His career has also included a stint with the Border Security Force (BSF), where he was awarded the BSF Director General’s Disc five times.
