Chandigarh, August 22, 2026: The Legal Metrology Wing of the Punjab Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department collected ₹53.26 lakh in compounding fees and conducted 14,412 inspections between January and July 2026, officials said.
During the seven months, the wing also issued 1,062 challans as part of its enforcement activities aimed at protecting consumer interests and ensuring compliance with prescribed standards of weights and measures.
Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister Lal Chand Kataruchak appreciated the work carried out by the department and encouraged its officers to continue working with greater dedication and efficiency.
The Legal Metrology Wing is responsible for ensuring that goods sold to consumers conform to the quantities, weights and volumes declared by sellers and manufacturers. Its enforcement activities are aimed at preventing consumers from being charged for quantities that are lower than those claimed.
The department currently has government-owned standard laboratories in Amritsar, Ludhiana, Jalandhar and Patiala. New standard laboratories are also proposed to be established at Sirhind and Khanna, which will further strengthen the department’s testing and enforcement infrastructure.
The department said strengthening inspections and enforcement mechanisms remains important for ensuring transparency in commercial transactions and safeguarding consumers against short measurement and other violations of legal metrology standards.
