Chandigarh, September 8, 2026: The Punjab Congress staged a protest in Chandigarh on Tuesday against the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab, with a large number of party leaders and workers participating in the demonstration led by Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring.
As the protesters attempted to move forward, Chandigarh Police put up barricades to stop them. The situation escalated as the police used water cannons to disperse the demonstrators.
During the protest, Congress leaders targeted the Punjab government over the law-and-order situation in the state. They alleged that incidents of extortion by gangsters continued to create fear among residents and claimed that people were increasingly feeling unsafe.
The protesters also raised concerns over problems allegedly faced by people due to the state government’s policies and highlighted cases of suicide, accusing the government of failing to address the issues adequately.
Raja Warring alleged that police action was being used to suppress those questioning the government and claimed that an “authoritarian atmosphere” had developed in Punjab.
He further accused the AAP government of allegedly shielding gangsters and said the Congress would take strict action against those responsible if voted to power.
The protest comes amid the Congress’s continued attacks on the Punjab government over law and order and other issues affecting residents. The party has been seeking accountability from the government and demanding stronger action against those allegedly involved in criminal activities.
