Chandigarh, September 9, 2026: Former Punjab Chief Minister and Congress MP Charanjit Singh Channi on Wednesday said the appointment of Sachin Pilot as the party’s Punjab in-charge had created a new sense of hope among Congress leaders and workers in the state.
Speaking after meeting Pilot, Channi said a new political atmosphere had emerged in Punjab and expressed confidence that the Congress would form the government in the state in the coming period.
“Sachin Pilot becoming the in-charge has created a new hope among Punjab leaders. A new atmosphere has been created in Punjab. I met him and his arrival will benefit us,” Channi said.
He said Pilot had the ability to take everyone along and expressed confidence that the party would perform strongly in the next elections.
Channi, however, said the decision regarding the state Congress president was not in the hands of individual leaders and that the party high command’s decision would be accepted.
“Who should be made the state president is not in our hands. Whatever decision the party high command takes, we will accept it,” he said.
Channi attacks Punjab government over economy
Channi also criticised the AAP-led Punjab government, alleging that the state’s financial situation had deteriorated under its rule.
He said that during his tenure, a Finance Commission had been constituted and claimed that the present government was struggling to meet its financial obligations, including payments to employees.
“Today, the Punjab government has ruined the economy. They do not have money to pay employees. There is no development taking place in Punjab,” Channi alleged.
He further said that the present government should be replaced at the earliest.
“The sooner this government goes, the better it will be for Punjab,” he said.
Channi thanks Jalandhar voters after Parliament award
Channi also thanked the people of Jalandhar as he is set to receive the Sansad Ratna Award for the second time. Expressing gratitude to his constituents, he said the recognition was particularly meaningful because of his work as Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Agriculture.
“I thank the people of Jalandhar. Today, I am receiving the Sansad Ratna Award. I am the Chairman of the Standing Committee on Agriculture, and I am receiving this award for the second time,” Channi said.
