In a heart-warming ceremony, Deputy Commissioner Rajesh Dhiman honored Sukhveer Kaur, a 20-year-old hockey sensation from Bhai Rupa village in Bathinda district. Sukhveer recently achieved a remarkable milestone as part of the Indian team that clinched the gold medal at the Women’s Junior Asia Cup 2026, held in China.
During the felicitation at his office, Deputy Commissioner Dhiman extended his congratulations to Sukhveer, acknowledging her hard work, dedication, and exceptional sporting talent. He emphasized that Sukhveer's journey to the national team was a testament to her perseverance and commitment. Remarkably, she was the only female player from Punjab in the victorious squad, bringing pride and honor to her state and the country.
Despite her success, the Deputy Commissioner advised Sukhveer to remain humble and use this achievement as a stepping stone for further accomplishments. He encouraged her to continue striving for excellence and delivering stronger performances in the future.
Sukhveer's journey in sports began at the tender age of nine. Initially drawn to athletics, she later transitioned to hockey after participating in trials organized by the Sports Department. Her athletic background significantly contributed to her stamina and footwork, proving advantageous on the hockey field. Her dedication and talent have now secured her a position in the Indian Junior Women’s Hockey Team, where she is currently training in Odisha.
District Sports Officer Rupinder Singh Brar highlighted the importance of Sukhveer’s early training in athletics, which laid a strong foundation for her hockey career. Her success story serves as an inspiration to aspiring athletes, showcasing the impact of hard work and determination.
Deputy Commissioner Dhiman also commended Sukhveer’s parents and her village community for their unwavering support throughout her sporting journey. He noted that Sukhveer has become a beacon of inspiration for other young individuals in the region.
In a bid to nurture more sporting talent, the Bathinda district administration has pledged to enhance sports infrastructure in Bhai Rupa village. This initiative aims to encourage more youngsters to engage in sports.
Additionally, the Deputy Commissioner has instructed officials to ensure adequate toilet facilities are available at venues where women athletes practice, emphasizing the importance of providing a conducive environment for female athletes.
The ceremony was attended by Additional Deputy Commissioner Kanchan, Sukhveer’s father Chamkaur Singh, and Jarnail Singh, the Youth Club president of Bhai Rupa village. This event not only celebrated Sukhveer’s achievements but also reinforced the community’s commitment to fostering sports and supporting young talents.
