Amit Shah’s Moga Rally: Intent to go solo, but alliance option still open.....by Baljit Balli
Punjab BJP's rally addressed by Amit Shah near Moga was colourful and impressive in terms of planning, turnout and social participation.
Although Amit Shah expressed the BJP leadership’s intention to contest the 2027 elections independently and said the party is preparing for it, as an experienced politician, he did not clearly announce that the BJP would never form an alliance with the Akali Dal or any other party under any circumstances.
Throughout his speech, he did not explicitly say that the BJP would contest all 117 seats on its own. While Amit Shah talked about fighting elections alone, he did not completely rule out the possibility of an alliance with the Akali Dal.
The deeper meaning of this is that, as a seasoned leader, he has kept the possibility of future alliances open. For instance, the Shiromani Akali Dal, led by Sukhbir Singh Badal, also claims it will form its own government, yet it has never clearly ruled out the possibility of an alliance government.
Apart from the issues of drugs and religious conversions, Amit Shah did not address many of Punjab’s fundamental and long-pending issues.
These include issues such as the water dispute, employment opportunities for youth and their growing migration abroad, increasing debt on the state ,Punjabis stranded overseas, the release of Sikh prisoners who have completed their sentences, farmers’ debts, the difficulties faced by farmers and residents living along the border, destruction caused by floods, and the pricing and processing of commercial crops.
While portraying the Narendra Modi government as supportive of Sikhs, he attempted to present the Indian National Congress as anti-Sikh.
He accused the Aam Aadmi Party of corruption and poor law and order, but did not present any strong evidence or announcement that could seriously damage the party politically.
Amit Shah mentioned the Shiromani Akali Dal only in the context of previous governments and avoided direct political attacks on its leadership, which indicates a notable level of restraint.
Although Shah’s 19-percent vote formula may appear significant, Punjab’s political character is quite different from other states.Another important question raised was why Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, who frequently visits Punjab, was not present at the rally.
In addition, Amit Shah has brought Rajya Sabha MP Satnam Singh Sandhu out of the Chandigarh circle and positioned him among the front-line leadership of Punjab BJP.
Overall, the rally will boost enthusiasm among BJP workers, but many questions regarding possible future alliances still remain unanswered.
