Real-Life Experiences Take Centre Stage at Kalgidhar Trust’s World Mental Health Day Event
Sukhman 2026 Highlights Social Media’s Impact on Teenagers’ Sleep, Addiction, Emotional Well-being and the Importance of Compassionate Support
Chandigarh, October 11, 2026: The Kalgidhar Trust, Baru Sahib, organised “Sukhman 2026 – Real-Life Experiences in Mental Health” to mark World Mental Health Day. The programme highlighted the importance of compassion, inclusivity and mental health awareness through personal testimonies, expert insights, a theatrical performance and interactive activities.
The event began with Shabad Kirtan presented by students of Akal Academy. Welcoming the participants, Dr. (Col.) Rajinder Singh, Director of the Akal Psychiatric and De-addiction Centres, emphasised that behind every mental health challenge or addiction lies a human being with a story that deserves to be heard.
“Recovery requires not just treatment, but also dignity, understanding, and continuous support from family and society,” he said.
Sardar Hardial Singh, founder of Gurbani Healing, attended the programme as the chief guest. Speaking about the role of spirituality and compassion in emotional well-being, he said that true wellness comes from inner strength, a sense of purpose and meaningful human relationships. He added that compassion and spiritual wisdom can help people navigate emotional challenges in life.
Theatrical Performance Highlights Digital Addiction
A thought-provoking theatrical presentation by the Manthan Group explored the growing problem of digital addiction and its impact on relationships, sleep and emotional health.
According to a study published by the Pew Research Center in April 2026, 37 per cent of teenagers in the United States who use TikTok reported that the platform had negatively affected their sleep. The finding highlighted the importance of developing healthier digital habits and maintaining meaningful human connections.
The programme also featured a video presentation on addiction, followed by a musical performance by Vikram Sethi, a former patient who has recovered from addiction and now works as a mentor and author. His song offered a glimpse into his personal journey of treatment and rehabilitation, bringing attention to the challenges and possibilities associated with recovery.
Experts Discuss Stress, Anxiety and Depression
Jagdeep Singh, a Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI)-registered special educator associated with the Kalgidhar Trust, conducted an interactive session on stress, anxiety and depression. The session encouraged participants to better understand common mental health challenges and the importance of seeking timely support.
Simranjit Kaur, a psychologist with the Trust, demonstrated practical techniques for stress management and relaxation, offering participants useful approaches to maintaining emotional balance.
Sangeeta Jain, Principal of SOREM School, shared insights into disability, the mental health of caregivers and the emotional challenges faced by persons with disabilities and their families.
A caregiver of a child with autism also shared personal experiences, highlighting the importance of empathy, inclusion and consistent family support in navigating the challenges associated with caregiving.
Dr. Tarandeep Singh, a professor at PGI, discussed the role of spirituality, selfless service and compassion in strengthening emotional resilience and promoting community well-being.
‘Thrive Board’ Becomes a Collective Expression of Hope
One of the interactive highlights of the event was the “Thrive Board”, where participants shared messages on the theme of “How to Thrive and Live a Better Life”. The messages collectively reflected hope, encouragement and a shared commitment to supporting one another through life's challenges.
Several stalls were also set up at the venue, including a stall by Chardikala Studio, a mental health bookstall and a SOREM School stall. The latter showcased handmade products created by children with special needs, highlighting their creativity, abilities and potential.
Through personal stories, expert discussions and community participation, Sukhman 2026 sought to address the stigma surrounding mental health and emphasised the need for greater understanding, timely intervention and collective responsibility.
