IMD issues yellow alert for Punjab, Northwest India; Rainfall intensity likely to ease
New Delhi, June 13, 2026 (ANI): The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Punjab and several other northwestern states, even as rainfall intensity is expected to gradually decrease in the coming days.
According to IMD scientist Naresh Kumar, the recent spell of moderate to heavy rainfall across northwest India was triggered by a western disturbance interacting with moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea.
"Over the past few days, northwest India, including Delhi, has experienced moderate to heavy rainfall. The system has brought significant rainfall to regions such as Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, with wind speeds reaching 60-70 kmph," Kumar said.
He added that the western disturbance is currently positioned over North Haryana and is gradually moving forward, leading to a reduction in rainfall intensity. However, light to moderate rain is still expected across the region.
The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Jammu and Kashmir, while strong winds are likely in Rajasthan.
The weather agency has forecast a continued wet spell across northwest India until June 19, with isolated to scattered rainfall expected in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, and Rajasthan.
Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are also likely in several areas, while temperatures in northwest India are expected to rise gradually by 4-6°C until June 17 before stabilising.
The IMD has advised residents to remain alert and follow weather updates, particularly in areas vulnerable to strong winds and thunderstorms.
