Chandigarh, June 20, 2026: In a major employment and power sector announcement, Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema on Saturday said that 2,327 Assistant Linemen (ALMs) will be recruited into the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL), significantly strengthening the state's power distribution workforce.
Addressing a press conference, Cheema said the recruitment process is in its final stages and the selected candidates will be appointed on a regular basis after clearing the mandatory Punjabi language examination and fulfilling all other government eligibility conditions.
Providing details, the Finance Minister said PSPCL had decided around eight to nine months ago to provide apprenticeship training to ITI-qualified candidates. Under the initiative, 2,600 seats were earmarked and a Computer-Based Test (CBT) was conducted for selection.
Following the examination, a total of 2,437 candidates joined the apprenticeship programme and have since completed more than six months of training with the power utility, he said.
Cheema added that when PSPCL later initiated recruitment for new posts, the state government decided to provide an opportunity to these already-trained candidates by incorporating them into the corporation's recruitment process and offering them direct employment.
He said the decision was taken under the directions of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann with the objective of creating employment opportunities for skilled youth while addressing manpower requirements in the power sector.
To ensure transparency and legal compliance, the government also sought the opinion of the Punjab Advocate General before proceeding with the recruitment exercise, Cheema said. Following legal clearance, the process of inducting 2,327 trainees as Assistant Linemen has now been nearly completed.
The Finance Minister described the move as a win-win initiative that will not only strengthen PSPCL's operational capacity but also provide stable employment to thousands of trained young professionals across Punjab.
