MP Aujla meets Nitin Gadkari, seeks Approval for Elevated Corridor in Amritsar; to meet Future Traffic Needs
Proposes elevated road from Gumtala Bypass to the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway; cites increasing traffic, Airport Road congestion, and the proposed international cricket stadium as key reasons

Congress Member of Parliament from Amritsar, Gurjeet Singh Aujla, on Thursday met Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari and urged him to approve the construction of an elevated corridor, one of the city's most significant infrastructure projects. During the meeting, Aujla briefed the Union Minister in detail about the rising traffic pressure in Amritsar, daily congestion on Airport Road, and the transportation challenges the city is expected to face in the coming years.
Aujla informed Gadkari that Amritsar is one of India's leading international gateway cities, attracting thousands of pilgrims, tourists, business travellers, and domestic as well as international visitors every day. With the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway set to become fully operational and the proposed international cricket stadium expected to be developed in the near future, traffic volume on this corridor is likely to increase substantially. He said that unless road infrastructure is expanded now, congestion will become a far more serious issue.
The MP proposed the construction of an elevated corridor from Gumtala Bypass, passing via Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport, Rajasansi, up to the roundabout on the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway near Morcha Sahib Gurdwara. He said the project would provide seamless, signal-free connectivity between the airport, the expressway, and key parts of the city, significantly reducing travel time and traffic congestion.
Aujla pointed out that Airport Road remains heavily congested throughout the day. Despite continuous efforts by the Punjab Police and the administration, long traffic jams frequently result in passengers missing domestic and international flights, causing financial losses and inconvenience. He added that the existing road infrastructure would not be able to handle the anticipated increase in traffic in the coming years.
The MP urged the Union Minister to grant immediate approval for the project and direct the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to conduct a feasibility study and prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) without delay. He also requested that the project be declared a high-priority national infrastructure project to ensure its timely execution.
Aujla said that once completed, the elevated corridor would not only provide major relief from traffic congestion for the residents of Amritsar but also ensure smooth and fast connectivity to Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport, the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway, and the proposed international cricket stadium. He added that the project would strengthen tourism, trade, religious travel, and accelerate the overall development of Amritsar.
