Chandigarh, August 24, 2017: Close on the heels of Haryana, Punjab and Chandigarh have also ordered suspension of Mobile Internet and Data services ahead of the court verdict on Sirsa Dera chief Gurmit Ram Rahim on August 25.
Chandigarh Home Secretary, Anurag Agarwal issued the order directing the telecom service providers including the state-run BSNL to ensure compliance of the order which will remain in force over the next three days.
Sources said that formal order in this regard is likely to issued by Punjab authorities.
Like Haryana, the order in both areas is aimed at preventing disturbance of peace and public order that is being apprehended in case the court verdict goes against the Dera chief.
The step is aimed at preventing spread of disinformation and false rumours through various social media platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook and Twitter etc on mobile phones and SMS for facilitating disruptive activities by unscrupulous elements that may cause loos of life and damage to public/private protery.
