Journalist Dies by Suicide in Jail
Amritsar, August 27, 2026: Journalist Deepak Bhandari, who was lodged in judicial custody in connection with an alleged case of smuggling banned medicines, died inside Amritsar Jail. According to preliminary information, Bhandari allegedly died by suicide inside the prison. He had been lodged in jail for around one-and-a-half years.
As soon as the incident came to light, jail authorities informed his family members, Civil Lines police station and the district administration. The police sent the body for post-mortem examination and initiated an investigation and legal proceedings into the incident.
According to sources, Deepak Bhandari had reportedly been under mental stress due to the prolonged legal proceedings and the lack of relief in the case. It is learnt that a few months ago, his brother had been granted bail by the High Court, but Bhandari himself had not received any relief in the case.
Police are investigating all aspects of the matter. Further details regarding the circumstances and cause of death are expected to emerge after the post-mortem report.
