Two Siblings Die of Snakebite in Punjab Ahead of Raksha Bandhan

Raikot, August 27, 2026: Just days before Raksha Bandhan, tragedy struck a family in Uppal Patti of Bassian village in Punjab when two young siblings died after being bitten by a venomous snake while sleeping in their courtyard during a power outage.
Seven-year-old Jaspreet Kaur died from the snakebite, and about 18 hours later, her eight-year-old brother Jobanpreet Singh also succumbed at the Christian Medical College (CMC) Hospital in Ludhiana.
According to the family, Jobanpreet woke up at around 3 a.m. and alerted his grandmother, telling her that he felt something in his hand. The family found a snake under the bedding and immediately rushed him to the Civil Hospital in Raikot. Due to his critical condition, he was referred to CMC Hospital in Ludhiana.
It was later discovered in the morning that Jaspreet, who had been sleeping beside her brother, had also been bitten by the snake. Her condition deteriorated and she was taken to hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
The two siblings were cremated together on Thursday. In another heartbreaking turn of events, their mother, Sarabjit Kaur, who is working in Oman, could not return in time to see her children for the last time. The family alleged that she was not granted leave and was unable to obtain her passport.
The family has also raised questions over an alleged delay in Jobanpreet’s treatment, particularly the response time of the government ambulance that transported him to the hospital.
