Chandigarh, November 4, 2025: Commuters across Chandigarh, Mohali, and Panchkula faced major disruptions on Tuesday as hundreds of cab drivers went on strike, protesting against low fares and government policies.
Angry drivers gathered at Sector-17 Ground, raising slogans against the Chandigarh Administration and demanding immediate action to address their grievances.
₹15 per km ‘Not Enough to Survive,’ Say Drivers
Speaking to reporters, Amandeep Singh, President of the Tricity Cab Union, outlined the key issues behind the strike:
	- Illegal “White Plate” Cars:
Drivers alleged that several private “white plate” vehicles are operating as cabs through various app-based companies, violating transport norms and severely affecting the earnings of licensed cab drivers.
	- Low Fare Rates:
The administration has fixed the fare at ₹15 per kilometre for the past four months. Protesters said this rate is unviable given the current cost of living and inflation.
	- Rising Operational Costs:
“Fuel prices have skyrocketed, and household expenses are increasing. With such low rates, we can’t cover vehicle maintenance or support our families,” Amandeep Singh said.
	- Unimplemented Policy:
Drivers also accused the administration of failing to implement the New Cab Policy 2026, which they claim was finalized but never put into effect.
Protest to Continue Indefinitely
The union has demanded strict action against illegal “white plate” vehicles and revision of fare rates. They warned that the sit-in protest will continue indefinitely until their demands are met.
