Punjab: Newlywed couple die by suicide within hours; Woman booked

Khanna (Punjab), June 23, 2026: A newly married couple from Boothgarh village near Khanna tragically died by suicide within hours of each other, leaving their families and the local community in shock.
The deceased have been identified as Gurkaramdeep Singh (31), an architect, and his wife Jasmine Nagra (23). The couple had married just four months ago.
According to a complaint filed by Gurkaramdeep's mother, Sinderpal Kaur, a woman from the village, identified as Navjot Kaur alias Deep, had been friends with her son before his marriage. The family alleges that after the marriage, the woman began blackmailing Gurkaramdeep, repeatedly demanding money and subjecting him to mental harassment.
The family further claimed that Gurkaramdeep became deeply distressed by the situation and consumed a poisonous substance at his home. After learning of her husband's death, Jasmine reportedly went into severe shock and also consumed poison. She later died during treatment.
Based on the statement of the deceased's mother, police have registered a case against Navjot Kaur under charges related to abetment of suicide.
Investigating officer ASI Charanjit Singh said police are searching for the accused woman and are thoroughly investigating the case. The bodies have been sent to Civil Hospital Khanna for post-mortem examination, and further legal action will be taken based on the investigation and medical reports.
The deaths of the young couple, who had recently started their married life together, have stunned residents of the area. Police say they are examining all aspects of the case to determine the exact circumstances that led to the tragedy.
