SAS Nagar (Mohali), June 24: Punjab NRI Affairs Minister Dr. Ravjot Singh on Wednesday reaffirmed the Punjab Government’s commitment to resolving the grievances of Non-Resident Punjabis (NRIs) in a transparent, fair and time-bound manner, stating that the government is taking sustained measures to protect the interests of Punjabis living abroad.
Addressing participants at the ‘NRI Milni-2026’ programme organised at Amity University, Mohali, Dr. Ravjot Singh said the initiative was aimed at providing a direct platform for NRIs to raise their concerns and obtain prompt action from the concerned authorities.
The event witnessed participation from a large number of NRIs belonging to the districts of SAS Nagar (Mohali), Rupnagar, Patiala and Fatehgarh Sahib. Senior officials from the NRI Affairs Department, Punjab Police and district administration were also present.
Highlighting the government’s performance, the Minister revealed that the NRI Affairs Department received 26,828 complaints between January 2022 and May 2026, out of which 25,870 complaints have been resolved. During the same period, 1,187 FIRs were registered and 1,451 accused were arrested, reflecting the government’s efforts to ensure justice for NRIs.
Dr. Ravjot Singh said that most complaints pertain to property disputes, illegal occupation of land, documentation-related issues and matrimonial disputes. He noted that the department receives nearly 5,000 to 6,000 complaints annually, with a significant number being settled through mutual resolution or legal proceedings.
The Minister said he is personally monitoring long-pending cases and regularly reviewing them with concerned officials to ensure their early disposal.
Emphasising the emotional and cultural bond NRIs continue to share with Punjab, Dr. Ravjot Singh said Punjabis settled abroad have brought global recognition to both Punjab and India while remaining deeply connected to their roots and heritage.
Responding to a query regarding contract marriages and cases involving the use of forged documents to obtain work permits or permanent residency abroad, particularly in Canada, the Minister termed the issue serious and of national significance. He said that while such matters fall under the jurisdiction of Parliament, the Punjab Government will strongly present the state’s concerns before the Union Government and seek a permanent and effective solution.
Dr. Ravjot Singh reiterated that under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, the Punjab Government remains fully committed to resolving NRI-related issues, especially those involving property disputes, illegal encroachments and matrimonial conflicts, in a fair, transparent and time-bound manner.
