Amritsar set for major sewage upgrade as Punjab clears new 60 60 MLD Treatment plant

Chandigarh, August 5, 2026: The Punjab Government has approved the construction of a new 60 Million Litres per Day (MLD) Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) and a corresponding pumping station in Amritsar under the AMRUT 2.0 Scheme, aimed at strengthening the holy city’s sanitation and wastewater management infrastructure.
The tender for the project has already been issued and is expected to close in August 2026. Construction work is likely to begin soon after the tender process is completed.
Once operational, the new facility will significantly enhance Amritsar’s sewage treatment capacity, reduce pressure on the existing and overloaded sewerage system, and help curb the discharge of untreated wastewater.
The proposed plant will also convert sewage waste into Bio-CNG, supporting the generation of clean energy and promoting sustainable waste management in the city.
The project is part of the Punjab Government’s broader AMRUT 2.0 initiative to upgrade urban infrastructure and improve water supply, sewerage and sanitation services across the state.
According to the government, more than 64 projects have already been completed under AMRUT 2.0 in Punjab, while around 50 to 60 additional projects are expected to be completed by March 2027.
Local Government Minister Harjot Singh Bains said the state government was committed to addressing Amritsar’s long-standing civic and infrastructure challenges.
“Amritsar is our holy city, and we will ensure that all its problems are resolved, whether they relate to sewerage, garbage management or any other civic issue. This is what the Bhagwant Mann Government stands for—building infrastructure that is sustainable and designed to last,” he said.
The new sewage treatment plant is expected to improve sanitation services, strengthen wastewater management and support environmentally sustainable urban development in Amritsar.
