Punjab BJP slams AAP over passing 9 bills in a day, calls it “Betrayal of Democracy”

Chandigarh, August 10, 2026: Punjab BJP State President Kewal Singh Dhillon has criticised the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government over the introduction and passage of nearly nine Bills on the final day of the Punjab Assembly session, alleging that the legislation was passed without adequate time for lawmakers to read, scrutinise and debate its provisions.
Dhillon said passing Bills with potentially far-reaching implications for the people without sufficient legislative scrutiny amounted to an insult to Punjab’s democratic and legislative processes.
He argued that the Assembly’s role was not to merely approve government proposals but to ensure detailed discussion, examination and debate on legislation in the public interest. He questioned how legislators could properly understand and deliberate on nine Bills if they were introduced and passed on the same day.
The BJP leader also alleged that the Punjab Assembly was being reduced to a “rubber stamp” for decisions taken by the AAP leadership in Delhi. He said Punjab’s legislators had the right to examine and debate laws affecting the state before giving their consent.
Referring to the ‘Jagat Jyot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar Amendment Act’, Dhillon alleged that the government had previously rushed through important legislation as well. He claimed that government ministers and legislators had later acknowledged at Sri Akal Takht Sahib that they had supported the legislation without fully reading or understanding it.
Dhillon said the government had failed to learn from that episode and was repeating what he described as the same practice by bringing several Bills on the final day of the session and passing them without adequate discussion.
He further alleged that such an approach undermined the rights of Opposition legislators and weakened the public’s ability to understand and scrutinise laws being enacted in Punjab.
The BJP state president said a majority in the Assembly did not give the government the freedom to bypass democratic procedures. He said the mandate secured by a government was a responsibility that must be exercised within constitutional and democratic norms.
Dhillon alleged that the AAP government was using its majority to weaken legislative debate, the role of the Opposition and democratic scrutiny.
He said the BJP would raise the issue before the people of Punjab and claimed that voters would give their response in the forthcoming Assembly elections.
