Kisan Vidhan Sabha demands legal MSP guarantee, time-bound action plan from Punjab Govt

Chandigarh, August 10, 2026: The Kisan Vidhan Sabha, organised by the Azad Kisan Morcha Punjab (AKM Punjab Forum) in Chandigarh on Monday, passed a resolution demanding a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price (MSP), assured procurement of crops and a time-bound action plan from the Punjab government on key farmers' issues.
The Kisan Vidhan Sabha was held at Shaheed Udham Singh Bhawan, Sector 44-C, with representatives of 16 farmer organisations participating in discussions on agricultural, economic and social issues affecting Punjab.
The farmers demanded that the Aam Aadmi Party government provide a legal guarantee for MSP, citing the election promise made by AAP national leader Arvind Kejriwal, and ensure MSP for all crops as promised by Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.
They also called for an effective and transparent procurement system for paddy, wheat, moong and other crops being promoted under crop diversification, saying farmers need assured markets and remunerative prices rather than announcements alone.
Farmers Demand End to Police Action
The Kisan Vidhan Sabha condemned the use of lathi-charge, tear gas, water cannons and arrests against farmers and rural workers protesting over their demands.
Referring to the recent police action during a protest by MGNREGA workers in Khanna, farmer representatives said peacefully raising demands was a democratic right and urged the government to resolve disputes through dialogue rather than confrontation.
E20 Policy and Crop Diversification
The farmers also demanded that the Punjab government assess the impact of the E20 policy on crop demand, procurement, prices, marketing and farm incomes.
They urged the state government to take up the matter with the Centre and ensure that policy changes do not adversely affect Punjab's farmers. They also called for practical crop diversification backed by assured markets, fair prices and procurement for crops including paddy, maize and sugarcane.
Timely Compensation for Crop Losses
The Kisan Vidhan Sabha demanded timely and full compensation for crop losses caused by floods, heavy rainfall, unseasonal weather and other natural disasters.
It called for a transparent and time-bound mechanism for girdawari, assessment of losses and disbursement of compensation to prevent delays and harassment of farmers.
The gathering also demanded a permanent mechanism for regular dialogue between the government and farmer organisations, particularly on MSP, procurement, crop diversification, input costs and farmers' livelihoods.
Action Against Drug Trafficking, Sacrilege
The farmer representatives expressed concern over the drug problem in Punjab and called for strict and impartial action against major drug trafficking networks and suppliers. They also sought stronger treatment, rehabilitation and employment support for youth recovering from addiction.
The Kisan Vidhan Sabha further demanded effective security arrangements at religious places and prompt, impartial investigations into incidents of sacrilege, with those found guilty being punished according to law.
Resolution Seeks Time-Bound Government Action
Through the unanimously passed resolution, the Kisan Vidhan Sabha called on the Punjab government to issue a clear, transparent and time-bound action plan on all the issues raised during the meeting.
The participating organisations said farmers' concerns were directly linked to Punjab's economy, rural employment, agriculture and wider social structure, and therefore required permanent and practical solutions.
The Azad Kisan Morcha Punjab said its participating organisations would consult among themselves before deciding on the next course of action on the issues raised at the Kisan Vidhan Sabha.
