Breaking: Farmers’ protest at Chandigarh-Mohali border ends after 7 days

Chandigarh, September 7, 2026: Farmer leader Balbir Singh Rajewal on Monday announced the end of the farmers’ protest at the Chandigarh-Mohali border after an agreement was reached with the Punjab government on several demands.
The farmers had been camping at the border for the past seven days.
Announcing the decision, Rajewal said the agreements reached on the issue of Punjab’s waters would be reconsidered and a special session of the Punjab Legislative Assembly would be convened to discuss the matter.
He said the farmers would now take up the issue with the Centre and alleged that Punjab’s water resources had been “looted” since 1966.
“We will not allow Punjab’s water to be looted anymore,” Rajewal said, adding that the farmers’ fight would now shift towards the Central Government.
On the issue of farmers’ debt, Rajewal said a proposal for a one-time settlement would be brought before the Assembly. Under the proposed arrangement, interest on the loans would not be charged and there would also be a reduction in the principal amount, he said.
Rajewal further said resolutions would be passed in the Assembly on the Electricity Amendment Bill and the Seed Bill.
He also claimed that Punjab would ensure that sugarcane farmers receive the highest sugarcane price in the country, while sugar mills would no longer be allowed to keep farmers’ payments pending.
“I have seen for the first time in my life that 100 per cent of the demands of an agitation have been accepted,” Rajewal said while announcing the conclusion of the protest.
