Chandigarh, September 27, 2026: Senior BJP leader Sunil Jakhar has said that extremism cannot be justified under any circumstances while speaking about the Khalistan issue and Punjab’s past experience with militancy.
In an interview with a private television channel, Jakhar said Punjab had already suffered serious consequences during the period of militancy and argued that any ideology that could contribute to a return of extremism should not be encouraged.
Jakhar also questioned the ideology associated with the Waris Punjab De organisation and referred to the debate surrounding Khalistan-related views attributed to some individuals associated with the group.
Referring to the February 2023 incident at the Ajnala police station, Jakhar mentioned the gathering of supporters of Amritpal Singh outside the police station in connection with the demand for the release of his associate. The incident had raised concerns over law and order and the confrontation between protesters and police.
Jakhar alleged that emotional issues were being used in Punjab for political gains. He said political and social discourse in the state should not encourage circumstances that could lead to a resurgence of extremism.
His remarks come amid renewed political debate in Punjab over the Waris Punjab De organisation, its leaders and issues concerning Panthic politics ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
Recent political gatherings, including separate conferences by the Shiromani Akali Dal and Waris Punjab De at the Chhapar Mela, have further highlighted the competition between different Akali groups.
