Fake DSP Arrest: Khanna police arrest man wanted in 2020 rape case

Khanna (Punjab), September 27, 2026: Khanna Police have arrested a man who allegedly posed as a Punjab Police DSP and used the fake identity to establish contact with a young woman. The accused, identified as Karanvir Sharma, a resident of village Kaddon, was arrested in connection with a rape case registered in 2020.
According to police, FIR No. 123 was registered at City Police Station-2, Khanna, on August 8, 2020, in connection with the rape allegation. The accused had allegedly remained absent from court proceedings for a prolonged period, following which the court declared him a proclaimed offender.
Police said further legal proceedings have been initiated following Sharma’s arrest. He is being questioned, while investigators are also gathering information about his alleged activities and any other cases linked to him.
According to the police investigation, Sharma allegedly posed as a DSP of the Punjab Police and appeared in photographs and videos wearing a DSP uniform. Police said he had also attended sports tournaments and social events while allegedly presenting himself as a police officer, including appearing as a chief guest at some events.
Police further alleged that Sharma used the fake police identity while contacting the woman in the 2020 case.
His name had also surfaced in Jammu and Kashmir in 2024, where Srinagar Police had reportedly detained him and another person after they were allegedly found moving around in police uniforms in the Nehru Park area. During verification, their claims of being police personnel were found to be suspicious, and subsequent investigation allegedly revealed Sharma’s identity as a fake DSP.
Another case has also been registered against Sharma at Doraha police station, where he was allegedly accused of attempting to obtain police protection and a gunman by making threats. Police said technical evidence was examined during the investigation.
Police said Sharma belongs to a prominent Kabaddi family and had himself played the sport in the past. Following his arrest in the old rape case, investigators are now examining his alleged impersonation as a police officer, his appearances at public events and his possible involvement in other cases.
